I’ve kind of kept my love for this show on the down-low, but honestly the 1st and 2nd season of ‘A Certain Scientific Railgun’ are among my favourite anime seasons ever–specifically the second season known directly as ‘A Certain Scientific Railgun S’ is tied with ‘To Love-Ru Darkness 2nd’ as my absolute favourite anime season ever. So that should give you a good idea at both my anticipation levels but also the ridiculously high bar this 3rd iteration has to try and clear, does it have what it takes? Let’s find out!
+ The episode starts out by introducing this premiere episode as ‘A Certain Magical Index Side Story’ which had me wary by the get-go, as fun and occasionally compelling as ‘A Certain Magical Index’ is it doesn’t hold a candle to ‘Index’–thankfully it seems that subtitle was more to explain the fact that this series takes place during an arc of Season 2 of ‘Index’ and isn’t a direct follow-up to Season 2 of ‘Railgun’. Confused yet?
+ Even though its been nearly seven years since the 2nd season aired pretty much everything with regard to voice actors, characterisation, setting and production values is on par if not more polished than they were previously. It’s business as usual and it feels so good. Hearing Kuroko’s “Onee-sama!” ring out was as gleeful as ever!
+ Despite this being a side-story of sorts it feels fresh–which is no doubt in part to the fact that we’re finally introduced to two of the other ‘Level 5’s’ in Academy City and their respective appearances are as cool and distinct as you’d hope for. Also the stakes feel high, which again–for a side story–is surprising!
All the action and comedy and drama and fun that this series is known for returns in full force in this 3rd season premiere. If you’re a fan of this show and you were at all worried about the gap between seasons making a negative difference I can safely report that it’s all positive from this die-hard fans’ perspective.
+ Anime Positive score: 96/100 +
